About Florence
Florence is the county seat of Pinal County and one of the oldest towns in the county, founded in 1866 by Civil War veteran Levi Ruggles on the south bank of the Gila River. It holds a National Historic District with more than 25 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Population was 26,785 at the 2020 census. Florence is served by Arizona State Routes 79 and 287, and the town hosts a large cluster of state, federal, county, and private prison facilities, a major local employer.
