About Kearny
Kearny is a company-built town in the Copper Basin of Pinal County with the motto "The Heart of the Copper Basin." It was constructed in 1958 by the Kennecott Mining Company as a planned community to relocate residents of Ray, Sonora, and Barcelona, whose neighborhoods were about to be swallowed by Kennecott's expanding open-pit copper mine; some houses were moved down the road intact. The town was incorporated in 1959 and named for General Stephen Watts Kearny, who passed through the area in 1846. Population was 1,741 at the 2020 census. The economic base remains the Ray copper mine and the Hayden Smelter, both owned and operated by ASARCO.
