About Columbia
Columbia is a large planned community in Howard County, Maryland, consisting of 10 self-contained villages. With a population of 104,681 at the 2020 census, it is the second-most-populous community in Maryland, after Baltimore (per the town's Wikipedia article, read September 24, 2026). Located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., it is part of the Baltimore metropolitan area and is tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census-designated place. Developer James Rouse founded Columbia in 1967, aiming to avoid the inconveniences of then-current subdivision design and to eliminate racial, religious, and class segregation. Columbia proper consists only of territory governed by the Columbia Association, a not-for-profit management company that functions as the community's homeowners association. The 10 villages are Wilde Lake, Harper's Choice, Oakland Mills, Long Reach, Hickory Ridge, Owen Brown, Kings Contrivance, Dorsey's Search, River Hill, and Town Center (all confirmed in the article). Each village has a village center with a shopping center, recreational facilities, a community center, and a system of bike/walking paths. Housing spans village townhomes and condos, single-family subdivisions, and newer downtown apartments and condos around the lakefront.
