About Ashtabula

Ashtabula is a Lake Erie port city in Ashtabula County, at the mouth of the Ashtabula River about 53 miles northeast of Cleveland. It was a major Great Lakes shipping and railroading boom town in the early to mid-20th century, thundering with coal and iron ore transport; immigrants from several nations came to work the docks and chemical plants, giving the area its identity (per the Images of America summary of Ashtabula, read September 24, 2026). The train ferry *Ashtabula* ran between Ashtabula and Port Burwell, Ontario from 1906 until it sank in a 1958 collision with the steamer *Ben Moreell* (Wikipedia, "Ashtabula (ferry)", read September 24, 2026). Population was 17,975 in the 2020 Census (Wikipedia, "Ashtabula, Ohio", read September 24, 2026).
