Ennis is a city in eastern Ellis County (20,159 residents in 2020; about 23,700 estimated in 2023) founded in 1872 with the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and named for railroad director Cornelius Ennis. It is officially designated the "Official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas" and the "Official Bluebonnet City of Texas." Each April, the Ennis Garden Club's Bluebonnet Trails draw over a million visitors to 40 miles of well-marked wildflower routes, and every Memorial Day weekend the National Polka Festival celebrates the city's Czech heritage with parades, dances and live bands in the fraternal halls.
