About Mountain Lakes

Mountain Lakes is a distinctive planned lake community, founded in 1910 around a chain of man-made lakes and built out with Arts-and-Crafts-influenced "Hapgood" houses. The borough centers on Mountain Lake and Birchwood Lake, with Island Beach, a National Register historic district, the Grimes Homestead, Tourne County Park and a Montclair-Boonton rail station — a small town with strong identity.
