About Wharton

Wharton is a compact former iron-mining and industrial borough — originally incorporated as Port Oram in 1895 and renamed in 1902 for Joseph Wharton, who owned the large ironworks in town (per pathwaysofhistorynj.net; read September 24, 2026). The Morris Canal runs through its identity: Hugh Force Canal Park preserves one of the longest watered sections of the canal greenway, with the restored Lock 2 East ("Bird's Lock") and tender's house, and the annual Canal Day festival celebrates the canal's role in the region (per nj-carnivals.com; read September 24, 2026). St. Mary's Church — built from stones parishioners collected from the iron mines where they worked — anchors the historic district (per Commons photo description; read September 24, 2026).
