About Woodland
Woodland — nicknamed the "City of Trees" for its valley oaks — is the county seat of Yolo County, about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Sacramento, incorporated February 22, 1871 (population 61,032 in 2020). Settled as "Yolo City" in the 1850s, it became the county seat in 1862 after a flood devastated the previous seat, Washington (now part of West Sacramento). A rail connection to Sacramento and later Interstate 5 made it a thriving agricultural trade center — three rice mills, a sugar beet refinery, and a tomato cannery once operated here. Woodland kept a "small town" feel: its historic Main Street has been reviving with restaurants, a new courthouse, and the Old State Theater's expansion into a 10-screen multiplex, and the annual "Stroll Through History" (since 1989) showcases its Victorian homes. The city was ranked one of America's top 100 places to live (No. 55, per Wikipedia; read September 24, 2026).
