About Tacoma
Tacoma (tə-KOH-mə) is the county seat of Pierce County and Washington's third-largest city (2020 pop. 219,346) — a deep-water port city on Commencement Bay about 30 miles from Seattle (per Wikipedia, read September 24, 2026). Locally the "City of Destiny" (western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad), Tacoma is the economic and cultural center of the South Sound (~1 million people), home to the Port of Tacoma — Washington's largest port — and to a downtown renaissance built around museums, the University of Washington Tacoma, and the Museum of Glass. It is known for the 1940 "Galloping Gertie" collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
