Manchester is the largest city in Meriwether County, with 3,604 residents in the 2020 census. Incorporated in 1909 and named for Manchester, England, it owes its existence to the Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic Railroad, which chose the site in 1907 for its junction of lines from Atlanta, Birmingham, and Waycross.
