About Augusta-Richmond County
Augusta is Georgia's second-largest city and the anchor of the metro, organized as the consolidated Augusta-Richmond County government (city and county merged in 1996). Set on the Savannah River across from North Augusta, South Carolina, it has about 200,000 residents. The local economy revolves around the military (Fort Gordon — renamed Fort Eisenhower on October 27, 2023, then reverted to Fort Gordon on June 11, 2025 — home to Army Cyber Command), medicine (Augusta University and its medical district), and the nearby Savannah River Site. Each April the city hosts the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. Housing spans historic intown districts (Summerville, Olde Town), mid-century suburbs, and newer subdivisions, with the most affordable prices in the metro core.
