About Graniteville
Graniteville (population about 2,700) is a historic mill village in Aiken County's Horse Creek Valley — one of the South's first planned textile communities, built by industrialist William Gregg beginning in 1846, with the mill operating by 1849 and Gregg's own 1845 Victorian home still standing across from it. The village is also marked by the January 6, 2005 Norfolk Southern train derailment that released chlorine gas, killed nine people, displaced thousands, and led to the closure of Avondale Mills in 2006 (verified via SC Picture Project and news archives, read September 2026). Today it is an affordable, close-knit community of mill homes and newer housing.
