About China Grove
China Grove (population 4,434 at the 2020 census; roughly 4,570 by 2023 estimates) is a southern Rowan County town about 35 miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte, between Salisbury and Landis along I-85/US-29. It is said to be the second-oldest settlement in Rowan County, having begun as a travelers' stop; it was originally called Savits Mill, renamed Lutherville in 1846, and renamed China Grove in 1849 for a grove of chinaberry trees planted near the town's rail depot. The town received its state charter in 1889, saw its first train pass through on January 5, 1885, and was one of the first towns in the United States with Rural Free Delivery — North Carolina's first rural mail route was established there in 1896 (sources: Wikipedia, read September 24, 2026; Town of China Grove Land Use Plan, revize.com).
