About Geneva-on-the-Lake

Geneva-on-the-Lake is a tiny resort village on Lake Erie's southern shore in Ashtabula County — Ohio's first summer resort, founded in 1869 when Cullen Spencer and Edward Pratt opened a public picnic ground at Sturgeon Point (wheninyourstate.com, read September 24, 2026). About 900 people live there year-round (916 in the 2020 Census; 2023 estimate 933), but the village transforms each summer. Its mile-long "Strip" on Route 531 — arcades, mini golf, food stands, shops, and restaurants — "feels like it hasn't changed since 1975" (wheninyourstate.com). Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, and Harvey Firestone were regular campers here in the early 1900s. The historic #5 Big Eli Ferris wheel (owned by Old Firehouse Winery) toppled in harsh weather on June 14, 2026; whether it can be repaired or replaced was still unknown as of June 15, 2026 (Wikipedia, "Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio", read September 24, 2026).
