About Jefferson
Jefferson is the county seat of Ashtabula County, founded in 1803 by Gideon Granger (U.S. Postmaster General under Thomas Jefferson), who envisioned a "Philadelphia of the West" — he named streets after Philadelphia avenues before the village existed (Wikipedia, "Jefferson, Ohio", read September 24, 2026). Population 3,226 at the 2020 Census (2024 estimate 3,188). Jefferson was a hotbed of abolitionism: Congressman Joshua Reed Giddings and Senator Benjamin Wade practiced law here, John Brown spoke in the village, and several houses served as Underground Railroad stations. The village hosts the Ashtabula County Fair, Strawberry Festival, Jefferson Days, and the Covered Bridge Festival.
