About Gulf
Gulf is a small historic community in Chatham County on the Deep River, with a 2020 census population of 122. It grew around 19th-century river and plank-road commerce — the Graham and Gulf Plank Road was completed in 1853 — and retains a village core recognized as the Gulf Historic District. The Haughton-McIver House (built 1840s, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985) stands as its landmark; nearby, the Marion Jasper Jordan Farm is also NRHP-listed.
