About Mebane
Mebane (pronounced "MEB-ən") is a fast-growing city mostly in Alamance County, with two eastern slivers in Orange County, and a 2020 census population of 17,797. Named for Revolutionary War general Alexander Mebane, it was incorporated as "Mebanesville" in 1881, renamed in 1883, and became a city in 1987. The North Carolina Railroad shaped its early growth; a 1908 postcard of its railroads and station survives (shown below).
