About Moncure
Moncure is a census-designated place in eastern Chatham County with a 2020 census population of 780. Founded in 1881 by Thomas Jefferson Moncure — an engineer for what became the Seaboard Air Line Railroad — along with Benjamin Womble and others, the town grew around the railroad depot and switching yard between the older river communities of Haywood and Lockville. West of town on the Deep River at U.S. 1 stands the Lockville Dam, Canal and Powerhouse (listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984): the present hydroelectric dam and powerhouse were built in 1922, generated power from 1922–1962 and 1983–2020, and were breached in April 2023.
