About San Elizario

San Elizario ("Sunny City") is a historic adobe village on the Mission Trail southeast of El Paso (~10,046 residents at the 2020 census), incorporated in 2013 after several earlier attempts. Founded in 1789 as a Spanish presidio, it is one of the oldest towns in the El Paso Valley and served as El Paso County's first county seat. The San Elizario Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town is famous for the 1877 Salt War and the 1881 jailbreak of Billy the Kid from the old county jail by his friend Pat Garrett. Its historic plaza district now mixes art galleries, restaurants, and the still-active 1877 Presidio Chapel of San Elizario.
