About Socorro

Socorro ("City with a Mission") is El Paso County's second-largest city (~34,306 residents at the 2020 census), sitting in the Lower Valley southeast of El Paso along the Rio Grande. Founded in 1680 by Manso and Piro Indians fleeing the Pueblo Revolt with Spanish settlers, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in Texas. The historic Socorro Mission (Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Socorro) anchors the city's identity, and the surrounding Mission Valley still carries acequia irrigation canals and farmland. Today Socorro is a fast-growing community with affordable housing, first incorporated in 1871 and reincorporated in 1985 after an annexation fight with El Paso.
