About Industry
The City of Industry is a salamander-shaped industrial municipality in the San Gabriel Valley along the SR-60 between El Monte and Diamond Bar — "much more a place of business than a community" (PBS SoCal, read September 24, 2026). Incorporated in 1957, it is essentially a business park with city status: its daytime working population swells into the tens of thousands while its resident population is only a few hundred (under 250 per census-era figures cited by PBS SoCal; the city's own 2014 Housing Element counted an adjusted 463 residents including the El Encanto Healthcare Center). The city budget approaches $250 million, and Industry is famous in pop culture as the real-world site of the Twin Pines Mall parking-lot scene from *Back to the Future* — filmed at Puente Hills Mall (1600 S. Azusa Ave). The city charges no business license tax, a deliberate economic-development policy.
