About Palmdale
Palmdale is the High Desert anchor of northern Los Angeles County — 169,450 people at the 2020 census, making it the 6th-largest city in the county and 33rd in California (per Wikipedia, read September 24, 2026). Named for the Joshua trees that German-Swiss settlers mistook for palms ("Palmenthal" = Palm Valley), it grew from railroad water stop to the "Aerospace Capital of America" after USAF Plant 42 and Lockheed's Skunk Works arrived in the 1950s. Affordable housing made it a classic bedroom community in the 1980s–90s. It remains one of the most affordable large cities in LA County.
