About Carver
Carver (~5,800 in 2020) is the historic Minnesota River town for which the county is named — after explorer Jonathan Carver, who mapped the area in 1766 (per Wikipedia, read September 24, 2026). A steamboat boomtown platted in 1857 (with investors including Territorial Governor Alexander Ramsey), it declined when the railroad arrived in 1871, then survived decades of stagnation — which ironically preserved one of Minnesota's first National Register historic districts (designated 1980, with 87 buildings; Preserve America Community named by the White House in 2007).
