About Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend is a small river town of roughly 700–1,900 residents on the Payette River along SH-55 (Payette River Scenic Byway), 23 miles north of Boise over the 4,242-foot Spring Valley summit ("Horseshoe Bend Hill"). Founded in 1867 during the gold-rush era and long a ranching and railroad town (the railroad from Emmett reached here in 1913; Boise Cascade's sawmill, once the primary employer, closed in 1998), it has become a bedroom community for Boise while keeping a ranching culture — annual events include a banjo festival in May, a national senior pro rodeo in June, and a fall festival. It has also made a bid to replace Idaho City as the Boise County seat. The surrounding Payette River basin offers kayaking, rafting, fishing, hunting, and quick access north to Cascade, Tamarack Resort, and McCall.
