Middleton is the oldest settlement in Canyon County — a fast-growing small city of roughly 9,500–13,000 residents (2020 census 9,573; 2026 estimates ~13,145), named for its location midway between old Fort Boise and Keeney's Ferry on the Oregon Trail. It was a stage station, had a post office by 1866, and incorporated in 1910. A 2007 fire destroyed 78% of Middleton High School; the town rebuilt. Today Middleton is a classic Treasure Valley bedroom community along SH-44, with new subdivisions, local diners and chains along the highway corridor, and a largely commuter workforce bound for Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell — all while retaining agricultural roots and views of two mountain ranges.
