About Granite Quarry
Granite Quarry (roughly 2,900 residents) is an eastern Rowan County town about 45 miles northeast of Charlotte via I-85 (per the town's 2040 plan, read September 24, 2026), named for the granite quarries that defined it. The town's story began in 1766 when German immigrant Michael Braun built the Old Stone House from hand-hewn granite — now a museum and the oldest German dwelling in North Carolina (Rowan Museum). Originally Woodville, then Woodsides, the town renamed itself Granite Quarry in 1905 as quarries along the Yadkin Railway drew workers; the distinctive local stone was cut for paving blocks, curbing, and buildings across the U.S. The town celebrated its centennial in 2001.
