Marshville (population 2,360 at the 2000 census; roughly 2,500 today) is an eastern Union County town about 35 miles southeast of Uptown Charlotte along US-74 and the Central Carolina Railroad corridor. The town was initially known as Beaver Dam, incorporated as Griffinsville on February 12, 1877, and renamed Marshville on May 11, 1895, in honor of J.W. Marsh and his family — town proprietors who donated land for the first church (1888), the town hall, a school, and two more churches (NC General Assembly joint resolution, 2002). Built around its railroad depot, Marshville emerged as a leading regional cotton market and agricultural center; its Boll Weevil Festival, an annual fall street fair and carnival, celebrates that cotton-farming heritage.
