Salisbury (roughly 35,000 residents) is the county seat of Rowan County, about 35–40 miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte along I-85. Deep history: 18th-century colonial town, Confederate prison site, and railroad hub, with one of the state's best-preserved historic downtowns.
