About Sharon
Sharon (641 residents at the 2020 census) is a small town in western York County, chartered in 1889 and named for Sharon, Pennsylvania (per local-history sources, read September 24, 2026). It grew with the Charleston, Cincinnati & Chicago ("3 C's") Railroad — and with a famous slight: the railroad dismantled the temporary depot and refused to build a permanent one, after York merchants were rumored to have paid the railroad $10,000 to skip Sharon. The town rebounded through cotton merchant W. L. Hill, whose 1913 Hill Store — still by far the largest building in town — anchors the Hill Complex Historic District (National Register, 2003), with a cotton gin, warehouses, and Hill's ca.
