Pendleton (population 3,489 in 2020; motto "History, Hospitality, Happenings...Home") is one of Upstate SC's oldest communities, minutes southeast of Clemson at the northeast tip of Lake Hartwell. Its entire historic district — village green, commercial buildings, churches, and homes (shown in the Commons photos below) — is on the National Register (1970). Sister city of Stornoway, Scotland.
