About Piedmont
Piedmont (population 5,411 in 2020) is a census-designated place in northern Anderson and southwestern Greenville counties, part of the Greenville-Anderson metro. It's a classic Upstate mill town on the Saluda River: originally called "Big Shoals of the Saluda" (a Native American river crossing), renamed Garrison Shoals after David Garrison's 1850s gristmill, then Piedmont — "foot of the mountains" — after H.P. Hammett's cotton mill. The Piedmont Manufacturing Company (operational 1876, largest mill in South Carolina by 1883; sold to J.P. Stevens in 1946; manufacturing ended 1977; most burned 1983) defined the town. The Saluda flows over a dam through the center of town, per Wikipedia (read September 24, 2026).
