About Williamston

Williamston (Anderson County) was laid out in 1852 around a mineral spring that its founder, West Williams, deeded to be "forever free to all the people." The spring made Williamston a 19th-century resort town — the 150-room Mammoth Hotel and 500 vacationer rooms earned it the "Saratoga of the South" nickname until an 1860 fire destroyed much of Main Street. The spring still flows at Mineral Spring Park (120 W Main Street), and the town hosts the annual Spring Water Festival. The current Town Hall was once Williamston Female College, part of Lander University's origin story. Part of the planned Pelzer–West Pelzer–Williamston trail system.
