About Canton
Canton is the county seat of Madison County, about 25 miles north of Jackson on I-55, with roughly 11,000 residents (2020 Census). Laid out in 1834 and incorporated in 1836, it is one of Mississippi's best-preserved antebellum towns: the 1855 Greek Revival Madison County Courthouse — one of only seven pre–Civil War courthouses in the state still essentially unaltered — anchors a National Register courthouse-square district with more than 200 listed properties.
