About Durant
Durant (about 2,500 residents) is a city in eastern Holmes County near the Big Black River, founded in 1858 as a station on the Mississippi Central Railroad (later the Illinois Central). It was named for Louis Durant, a Choctaw chief who lived on a bluff across the river before Indian Removal.
