About Manteca
Manteca (man-TEE-kə; Spanish for "lard" — a railroad misspelling of the intended "Monteca" that stuck) is a fast-growing city of about 83,500 (2020 census) on SR-99 between Stockton and Modesto. Founded in 1861 by Joshua Cowell and incorporated in 1918, it was long an agricultural town and has boomed as a commuter suburb with big-box retail, logistics warehouses, and new master-planned neighborhoods.
