About Castle Rock
Castle Rock (population 73,158 in 2020) is the Douglas County seat, about 28 miles south of downtown Denver at the I-25/US-85 junction. Named for the prominent butte (the Rock) towering over downtown — topped since 1936 by a lighted star — it began as an 1870s rhyolite-quarrying town; its stone built the Colorado State Capitol. Historic downtown along Wilcox Street keeps a walkable core, while newer growth stretches east and west. Philip S. Miller Park's 300-foot incline challenge and zip line draw outdoor crowds, and the town's historic Cantril Street homes are listed on the National Register.
