About Golden
Golden (population 20,399 in 2020) is the county seat of Jefferson County, set where Clear Creek exits the Front Range between North and South Table Mountains. Founded June 16, 1859, as Golden City during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and named for prospector Thomas L. Golden, it served as capital of the Colorado Territory from 1862 to 1867 before losing the railroad race — and the capital — to Denver. Today its motto is "Where the West Lives": a walkable historic downtown beneath the mesas, home to the Colorado School of Mines, the Coors Brewery (the largest single-site brewery in the world), the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NREL), the American Mountaineering Center, and the Colorado Railroad Museum. Buffalo Bill Cody is buried on nearby Lookout Mountain.
