About Superior
Superior (population 13,094 in 2020) is a small town in Boulder and Jefferson counties, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Denver between Boulder and Broomfield. Founded in the 1890s as a coal-mining town, it grew slowly until the 1990s, when the Rock Creek and newer subdivisions transformed it into a bedroom community with Boulder Valley schools. The town's coal-mining heritage survives in Original Town Superior, and the December 2021 Marshall Fire destroyed hundreds of homes — a recovery still shaping the community.
