About Forest
Forest (about 5,700 residents) is the Scott County seat, on I-20 and US-80 about 40 miles east of Jackson. Settled in the 1850s and named for the dense surrounding forests, it was chartered on February 17, 1860, and won the county seat in May 1873 after a three-election, near-war-level feud with Hillsboro, whose courthouse Sherman had burned on his March to the Sea.
