About Satartia
Satartia — Mississippi's smallest incorporated municipality at just 41 residents (2020) — is a Choctaw word meaning "pumpkin place." Located on the east bank of the Yazoo River, it was once a thriving river port and is one of the oldest non-Native settlements in Yazoo County, shipping cotton by steamboat to New Orleans in the early 1800s. During the Civil War, Grant sailed upriver and captured the village, using the Wilson House on Plum Street as his headquarters; the well-regarded "Satartia Rifles" regiment also hailed from here.
