About Alton

Alton (pop. 18,198 in the 2020 census) is a growing residential city immediately west of Mission along US 83 — effectively Mission's neighbor-suburb. Much of the city was in its own Alton Independent School District until it merged into Mission CISD in 1975. Housing is largely affordable single-family subdivisions, and the city has grown rapidly as the metro's west side fills in. A memorial at FM Road 676 (shown in the Commons photo below) marks a historic 1940 school-bus tragedy in the area.
