About Hidalgo
Hidalgo (pop. 13,964 in the 2020 census) is the border city directly south of McAllen, home to the McAllen–Hidalgo–Reynosa International Bridge and to Payne Arena (formerly State Farm Arena) — the metro's big concert and events venue, once home of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse Museum & World Birding Center preserves the irrigation history that made the Valley bloom. The city even claims the title "Killer Bee Capital of the World" (the first U.S. Africanized-bee colony was found nearby) and hosts the annual BorderFest celebration.
