About San Juan

San Juan (pop. 35,294 in the 2020 census) is known across South Texas for the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle — one of the largest churches in South Texas and a major Catholic pilgrimage site drawing thousands of visitors weekly. The community was organized in 1909 as part of the Valley's irrigation-era land boom; today it's a close-in McAllen suburb of single-family neighborhoods, about 10 miles north of the Pharr–Reynosa International Bridge.
