About Weslaco
Weslaco (pop. 41,103 in the 2020 census; est. ~43,000 in 2023) is the mid-Valley city — 5 miles north of Progreso and 7 miles north of the bridge to Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, sitting on I-2/US 83. Its name is a contraction of the W. E. Stewart Land Company that founded it. The city pairs a walkable historic downtown (Cortez Hotel) with citrus and farming heritage, and it punches above its weight on nature: Estero Llano Grande State Park and the Valley Nature Center sit inside or at the edge of town. South Texas College's Mid-Valley Campus and a Texas A&M agricultural research center are here.
