About Lafayette
Lafayette is a historic small city (2020 census population 4,423) on OR-99W between McMinnville and Dundee. Founded in 1847 by pioneer Joel Perkins and named for Lafayette, Indiana, it was Yamhill County's first county seat, holding that role until voters moved the seat to McMinnville in 1889. The city sits near the Yamhill River, and the site of the 1900 Yamhill River lock and dam — decommissioned in 1954 and demolished in 1963 — is now the county's Lafayette Locks Historical Park. Lafayette blends pioneer history with surrounding wine country.
