Vernonia (2020 Census population ~2,400) is a former timber town in the Coast Range of Columbia County, set on the Nehalem River at the end of the Banks–Vernonia State Trail. Rebuilt after devastating floods in 1996 and 2007 (including an elevated, flood-proof K-12 school campus), it is a quiet, affordable community known for Vernonia Lake, the rail-trail, and access to the Tillamook State Forest.
